What it is
Preload is the force a spring applies at rest. In a ball detent or pawl, more preload pushes the ball or pawl harder into its seat.
Why it matters
More preload gives firmer, louder steps and more resistance; less gives lighter steps. Some fidgets let you adjust it with a screw or by swapping springs.
