Adds lasting color; bold solids on Al, rainbow hues on Ti.
What it is
Anodizing is an electrochemical process that grows a controlled oxide layer on a metal surface. On Aluminum, the layer is porous and can absorb dyes, which is why aluminum EDC comes in so many colors. On Titanium, color comes from the oxide layer's thickness: different voltages create different thicknesses, and light interference makes them appear blue, gold, purple and more, with no dye needed.
How it feels in your EDC
Anodizing adds color without noticeably changing weight or feel. The surface texture underneath, such as bead blasted, stonewashed or polished, still shapes how it feels in hand. Anodized aluminum tends to look even and saturated, while anodized titanium often has a vivid, slightly iridescent glow that shifts with the light.
Care & aging
Anodizing is a surface layer, so daily carry can slowly wear edges and high spots back to the bare metal beneath. Titanium anodizing is very thin and tends to show wear sooner, while aluminum anodizing is generally harder. Many people enjoy the worn edges as character. Clean it with a soft cloth and mild soap, and avoid abrasive polishes and harsh chemicals.
