Bead Blasted Finish

At a glance

Short name
Bead Blasted
Type
Finishes
Written by: FZEDC

Blasted with small beads to create a textured surface; appearance depends on the media and process.

What it is

Bead blasting is a finish made by firing fine, round glass beads at a metal surface under air pressure. Unlike the sharp grit used in sandblasting, round beads peen the surface rather than cut it, leaving a smooth, even matte or satin texture. Bead size, pressure and the starting finish depend on the maker.

How it feels in your EDC

A bead-blasted surface feels soft and silky under your fingertips, smoother than sandblasted. It has a clean, uniform, low-glare look that suits modern, minimalist designs. It is a popular base finish on Titanium and Aluminum, and it often serves as the surface before anodizing.

Care & aging

Because the texture is so even, fingerprints, skin oils and fresh scratches can show more than on a stonewashed surface. With daily handling, high-contact areas may slowly burnish to a slight sheen. Wipe it with a dry microfiber cloth, and use a little mild soap for oils. Avoid polishing compounds, which can smooth the texture away.
