Matte Finish

What it is

Matte describes a surface that scatters light instead of reflecting it, so it looks flat and non-glossy. It is an effect rather than a single process: sandblasting, bead blasting, stonewashing and certain coatings can all create a matte look. The texture and depth of the matte finish depend on the method and the maker.

How it feels in your EDC

A matte surface has a calm, understated, low-glare look that lets the shape and machining speak for themselves. In hand, it can feel dry, soft or lightly textured depending on how it was made. Many people find matte finishes comfortable and grippy, and they tend to hide light scratches better than shiny surfaces.

Care & aging

Skin oils can darken a matte surface slightly in high-contact areas, and with daily carry those spots may burnish to a gentle sheen. Wipe it with a dry microfiber cloth, and use a little mild soap for oily marks. Avoid polishing compounds, which can permanently add shine and change the matte look.
