What it is
Aluminum is a light, easy-to-machine metal. At roughly 2.7 g/cm³, it is about a third the density of Stainless Steel. EDC makers usually use aerospace alloys such as 6061 or 7075, though the exact alloy depends on the maker. It is popular for sliders, spinners and cases because it machines cleanly and keeps a carry light.
How it feels in your EDC
Aluminum feels light and easy to carry all day, with a softer, quieter presence than heavier metals. It is often anodized, an electrochemical process that builds a hard oxide layer on the surface. That layer can be dyed, which is why aluminum EDC comes in so many colors. A lighter build changes the feel and momentum, so many makers pair it with heavier parts for balance.
Care & aging
Aluminum is softer than steel and titanium, so it can dent or scratch more easily if dropped or carried with keys. On anodized pieces, edges may slowly wear to the bright silver metal beneath, which many collectors enjoy as natural character. Clean it with a soft cloth and mild soap, and avoid strong alkaline cleaners or abrasive polishes that can damage the anodized surface.
