A man-made alloy that throws hot sparks when scraped, used to start fires.

What it is

Ferrocerium is a synthetic alloy of iron and rare-earth metals such as cerium. Scraped with a hard, sharp edge, it throws off hot sparks, which is why it is used in lighter flints and fire-starting rods.

In your EDC

A ferro rod still works when wet, so it is a common backup fire starter in outdoor and survival kits.
