A spring-loaded ball engages a track or recesses to create tactile steps.

What it is

A ball detent uses a small ball pressed by a spring against a track or a series of recesses. As parts move, the ball rides over the surface and drops into each recess, creating defined steps or stops. The ball may be steel, ceramic or plastic such as POM, and the track design depends on the brand.

How it feels in your EDC

Ball detents give stepped, textured feedback: a series of small bumps or a firm click into each position. Changing the track, spring strength or ball material can make the feel softer or crisper, denser or more spaced out. They are often combined with magnets, which handle return force while the detent adds texture.

What to look for

Check what the ball and track are made of and whether they can be swapped, since many designs offer several tracks for different feels. Small balls and springs are easy to lose, so open the piece over a tray. Keep the track clean, as grit can make the steps feel rough.
