Motion between a magnet and conductor induces currents that resist movement.
What it is
Eddy-Current Damping happens when a magnet moves near a conductive, non-magnetic metal such as copper or aluminum. The motion induces small circulating electric currents, called eddy currents, in the metal, and those currents create a magnetic field that resists the movement. No power source is needed; the effect comes from the motion itself.
How it feels in your EDC
Eddy-current damping gives a smooth, silky resistance, as if the part is moving through something thick, with no contact or friction between the parts. The faster you move it, the stronger the resistance. It feels very different from a click or snap: calm, even and quiet.
What to look for
Look at which conductor and magnets the brand uses, since material, magnet strength and gap affect how strong the damping feels. A marketing name with words like “current” does not by itself mean eddy-current damping, so check the brand’s description of the mechanism. Keep strong magnets away from cards, phones and medical implants.
