A heat-colored blue surface; the oxide layer and appearance depend on the base metal.
What it is
Heat bluing uses controlled heating to develop a blue surface color on metal. It can be used on steel and titanium, but their oxide layers and processing conditions differ. On titanium, the color comes from light interference in a surface oxide film. The maker's term does not by itself confirm whether a torch, kiln or another heating method was used.
Heat Blued vs other finishes
Heat Blued emphasizes a blue result produced by heat. Flamed describes torch-applied heat coloring, often with multicolor gradients. Anodized uses an electrochemical process rather than heating alone. Black Oxide describes a conversion finish commonly used on steel; a blue titanium finish should not automatically be classified as Black Oxide. These terms can overlap in makers' descriptions, so follow the stated process rather than color alone.
Care & aging
Follow the maker's care instructions for the specific metal and finish. Avoid abrasive polishing unless recommended, as it can alter the colored surface. The name Heat Blued alone does not establish scratch resistance or corrosion protection. Do not try to recolor an assembled fidget with heat; consult the maker.
