Gyroscopic Effect

Short name

Written by: FZEDC

The resistance a spinning object shows when you try to tilt it.

What it is

A spinning mass resists changes to the direction of its axis. Tilt a spinning fidget and you feel it push back or move sideways, an effect known as gyroscopic precession.

Why it matters

That tug is part of the appeal: it makes a spinner feel alive in the hand. Heavier, rim-weighted and faster-spinning parts produce a stronger effect.

Also known as: Gyro Effect, Gyroscopic Precession,
