Molten metal molded into consistent shapes at a friendlier price.
What it is
Die casting is a process where molten metal is forced under high pressure into a hardened steel mold, called a die. Once it cools, the part is released and usually finished. Zinc alloys and Aluminum are common choices. Because one die can produce many identical parts, die casting suits larger production runs and complex shapes. The alloy and finishing depend on the maker.
How it feels in your EDC
Die-cast pieces can feel solid and substantial, especially in zinc alloys, and the process makes approachable prices possible. Compared with CNC machining from solid stock, die-cast parts may show softer edges and less crisp detail, and some can contain tiny internal pores. Quality varies widely, and good finishing makes a big difference.
Care & aging
Many die-cast parts are plated or coated, so care mostly depends on that surface. Over time, edges and high spots may wear through the coating, revealing the base metal beneath. Wipe it with a soft cloth, keep it dry, and avoid abrasive polishes or harsh chemicals that can damage the finish.
