Lightweight plastic with glass-like clarity and a smooth feel.

What it is

Acrylic, or PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate), is a clear, rigid plastic often sold under names such as Plexiglas. It offers glass-like clarity at a fraction of the weight and is easy to machine, polish and laser cut. In EDC, it appears in clear or colored bodies, windows, layers and display cases. The exact grade and color depend on the brand.

How it feels in your EDC

Acrylic is light and feels smooth, hard and slightly glossy in hand. It is very clear and takes a bright polish, so it can show off internal parts or add a clean, glass-like accent. It is more rigid but less impact resistant than Polycarbonate, and a piece built with it feels lighter than a metal version.

Care & aging

Acrylic scratches more easily than glass and can crack if dropped hard, especially at thin edges or around holes. Clean it with a soft cloth and mild soap. Avoid solvents such as acetone and alcohol-based cleaners, which can cause fine cracks called crazing. Light surface scratches can sometimes be buffed out with a plastic polish.
