Fused layers of mixed metals for a wood-grain look.

What it is

Mokume-gane, often shortened to Mokume, is a Japanese metalworking technique whose name roughly means "wood-grain metal." Thin sheets of different-colored metals, such as Copper, Brass, Silver or nickel alloys, are stacked and fused under heat and pressure. The billet is then carved, twisted or forged, revealing layers that look like flowing wood grain. The exact metals depend on the maker.

How it feels in your EDC

Mokume usually feels dense and warm in hand, since it is built mostly from heavier metals like Copper and Brass. Its appeal is the artistry: every piece shows a unique pattern of contrasting tones, making it a favorite for beads, buttons, inlays and collector pieces. It is similar in spirit to Damascus and Timascus, but made from non-ferrous metals.

Care & aging

Each metal in Mokume ages at its own pace, so a patina often deepens the contrast between layers over time. Many collectors enjoy watching that pattern develop. Wipe it with a dry cloth to keep the aged look. To brighten it, use a gentle metal polish sparingly, since heavy polishing can soften the contrast. Follow the maker's care advice for specific treatments.
