What it is
POM (polyoxymethylene), also known as acetal or by the trade name Delrin, is an engineering plastic known for low friction, stiffness and dimensional stability. It machines cleanly and holds tight tolerances, which is why it is widely used for gears, bushings and sliding parts. In EDC, it often appears as balls, liners, tracks and spacers. The exact grade depends on the brand.
How it feels in your EDC
POM feels smooth and slightly waxy, and it slides against metal with little friction. Used as a ball or liner, it can soften contact noise and make movement feel even and controlled. It is lighter than metal, so it changes the sound and feel of a piece rather than its weight. The final feel still depends on the full design, including fit and tolerances.
Care & aging
POM does not rust and resists most everyday oils and cleaners. With heavy use, balls and liners slowly wear, which can gradually change the feel; many brands sell replacement parts. Keep it free of grit, which can scratch both the POM and the metal around it. Wipe it with a dry cloth and avoid strong acids and harsh solvents.
