The hardness number used for knife steels, measured on the Rockwell C scale.

HRC is a hardness value on the Rockwell C scale, measured by pressing a diamond cone into the steel and recording how deep it goes. Knife steels are typically listed in a range such as 58–62 HRC.

Higher hardness usually means better edge holding, while lower hardness tends to mean more toughness; the right balance depends on the steel and its use.
